Get Paid to Support the Grid: Virtual Power Plants
A battery like Tesla Powerwall can do more than keep your lights on during an outage. In eligible areas, you can opt into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program that allows your battery to support the grid during peak-demand events—while you keep a backup reserve. Availability and payouts vary by utility and program.

What Our Customers Think
FAQs
What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?
Yes, objects such as trees and buildings may cause shadows to fall on specific solar panels, decreasing their efficiency and output. Other obstructions, such as dust and snow, can also affect overall system performance.
How is this different from regular backup power?
Backup power is for your home — it keeps the lights on during an outage. A VPP is about supporting the grid. You can still reserve a portion of your battery for backup and allow the rest to participate in the VPP.
Will I lose my emergency backup protection?
No. With Tesla’s VPP, you control how much energy to reserve. Most people keep 20–30% of their battery for backup and allow the rest to participate. You’re always in control.
Does this affect my net metering or solar incentives?
Nope. VPP participation is in addition to your existing solar credits or net metering program. You’re earning extra income on top of your normal system benefits.
How much can I earn in a VPP?
Earnings vary by utility and location. Some programs advertise up to $2,900/year in high-demand zones, though $300–$500 per summer is more typical in NJ. We’ll help estimate your potential earnings during your consult.
