Get Paid to Support the Grid: Virtual Power Plants

A battery like Tesla Powerwall can do more than keep your lights on during an outage. In eligible areas, you can opt into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program that allows your battery to support the grid during peak-demand events—while you keep a backup reserve. Availability and payouts vary by utility and program.

How Tesla’s VPP Program Works (and Who’s Eligible)

Tesla Powerwall owners can opt in through the Tesla app when their utility participates. In NJ, select programs are starting with PSE&G, JCP&L, and Atlantic City Electric — and expansion is expected in 2026 and beyond.

  • Eligibility:
    Tesla Powerwall + app access

  • Opt-In Enrollment:
You choose to join via the app

  • Backup Reserve:
Set your preferred minimum (e.g., 20% kept for yourself)

  • Grid Events:
Your Powerwall may discharge briefly during demand spikes

  • Payments:
    Based on your energy contribution

How Is This Different from Backup Power or Net Metering?

From detecting malfunctions to replacing faulty wiring, Our experts offer unparalleled services to guarantee that your solar panels run at peak performance.

  • Backup Power

Your battery keeps the lights on during an outage

No grid interaction unless there’s an outage

    No income opportunity

  • Net Metering

You get utility bill credits for excess solar sent to the grid

Earnings tied to your solar exports (based on rate programs)

    Credit-based, not cash

  • Virtual Power Plant

Your battery discharges to the grid during grid events — and you get paid

Direct compensation for helping the grid during peak stress

    Cash-based incentive programs (where available)

Let Your Battery Pay You Back

Already have a Powerwall? Thinking about one? Ask us how much you could earn by joining a Virtual Power Plant. We’ll confirm your utility’s program availability and show you how to enroll or set it up during your consultation.

After a terrible experience with another solar salesperson, Solar Me was recommended by a friend of a friend in my community. The experience was night and day compared to my original experience. Great communication from start to finish, the installers were prompt and did a great job with the install. Having an extensive sales background, I can say that my experience with Solar Me was honest and straightforward. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to invest in solar!

FAQs

  • What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

Yes, objects such as trees and buildings may cause shadows to fall on specific solar panels, decreasing their efficiency and output. Other obstructions, such as dust and snow, can also affect overall system performance.

  • How is this different from regular backup power?

Backup power is for your home — it keeps the lights on during an outage. A VPP is about supporting the grid. You can still reserve a portion of your battery for backup and allow the rest to participate in the VPP.

  • Will I lose my emergency backup protection?

No. With Tesla’s VPP, you control how much energy to reserve. Most people keep 20–30% of their battery for backup and allow the rest to participate. You’re always in control.

  • Does this affect my net metering or solar incentives?

Nope. VPP participation is in addition to your existing solar credits or net metering program. You’re earning extra income on top of your normal system benefits.

  • How much can I earn in a VPP?

Earnings vary by utility and location. Some programs advertise up to $2,900/year in high-demand zones, though $300–$500 per summer is more typical in NJ. We’ll help estimate your potential earnings during your consult.

  • What utilities in NJ support VPPs?

Earnings vary by utility and location. Some programs advertise up to $2,900/year in high-demand zones, though $300–$500 per summer is more typical in NJ. We’ll help estimate your potential earnings during your consult.
